As part of my recent learn-everything spree, I've started teaching myself Maori.
But the general reaction from others has been as follows:
other: woah ... maori? (sudden tapering of enthusiasm)
me: (head nod and muttering)
other: it's like compulsary for your university study or something?
me: (head shake and muttering)
other: why are you bothering then?
me: the culture's notions of humanity make sense.
other: but it's like so primal and ...
me: precisely.
It strikes me as queer. Homer and Virgil's works are in vogue as primary aids in masturbation. Study of the Bible is excusable. And yet learning Maori in order to comprehend possibly the most psychologically complex mythology I've known is shunned.
Golly, it's loaded with glorious Oedipus and Elektra complexes, incest, rape and females considerably more beautifully tragic than Dido.
It's biblical genesis sans the denial and Roman epic sans the protagonists-made-dull-and-heroic-for-augustan-propaganda.

- paper on the possibility of a man created deus-virtualis, a 'god' constructed using atomic or nano-chip computer technology.
- paper titled 'choosing a delusion - conventional gnosis versus schizophrenia'
- preparation of updated poetry portfolio
bummer that it all seems so drab. might go watch some trash tv, eat cashews or settle for sleep. |
